Pushkin House in Seoul Celebrates 10th Anniversary
Of all great Russian poets, Pushkin must be one of the most familiar names to Koreans. It is not a coincidence that a private institute aimed at spreading Russian language and culture in Korea was named after this renowned Russian writer, while a Russian government-run agency for the same purpose has yet to come into existence.
Pushkin House in Seoul was founded in 2002 to satisfy growing interest in Russian language and culture among Koreans. Since the diplomatic relations between South Korea and Russia were established in 1990, steady efforts were made to promote cultural exchanges in various ways such as renowned orchestras of the two countries inviting each other; organizing dedicated exhibitions; and sharing expertise. Some of these efforts achieved successful outcomes such as a quantum leap in Korean ballet.
However, Korea was still in need of a permanent organization devoted to supporting those who wanted to learn more about Russian culture and language, when Dr.Kim Seonmyeong whose major is Russian literature founded Pushkin House in Seoul. Dr. Kim’s commitment to introduce Koreans to Russian culture was strong enough to overcome skepticism.
